IFFK 2013 - 209 Films to be exhibited in IFFK 2013
The 18 th International film festival of Kerala(IFFK) aims to bring to the fore the arrival of new generation of directors and projecting the prominence of masters by celebrating their accomplishments.The festival will be notable for the films which capture the angsts and aspirations of modern generation,which are varied in content and rich in inventiveness.
The films which will be shown under the category of ‘world cinema from new directors’,will be those which have featured in acclaimed film festivals and have won accolades.209 films will be exhibited from 56 different countries in 16 different categories in the festival.
In the much touted competition section 16 films including two from Malayalam will be there.Seven films which depict the grim and harsh life in Nigeria will be shown in the country focus section.The street film making concept which is making waves in Latin American countries, which are bound to give energy and push to young film makers,will also be given a special place in the festival with 8 films.These films will be remarkable for their content which is not swayed by commercial considerations..
In the Indo German connection section two films of Fritz Lang who is known as the pioneer of expressionist films will be shown.The endeavour is to underscore the fact that cinema is much more than an entertainment and acommercial medium,but an art form which is ever evolving.There will be a special focus on Santharam,his films, life and times and 8 films are lined up.
In the Samurai film category seven films will be shown which depict the rich Samurai tradition in Japan.Seven films in this section include films of renowned directors Kon Ichikawa and Kenji Mizugochi.
In the retrospective section five films of French new wave director Jean Renoir will be a novel experience.Thirty seven films from other renowned directors like Yugoslavian Director Goran Paskaljevic,Italian director Marco Bellochio,Japanese director Takashi Mike,French director Claire Denis,German director Haren Farocki will also exhilarate the viewers.
Six films of acclaimed director Hariharan will be exhibited in the retro section.Apart from that films of Carlos Saura who won the award for overall contribution will add to the beauty of the festival which also includes two films from the jury.
In the contemporary Asian films category there are six films.Other ctaegories include Indian cinema,Malayalam cinema today and top angle Indian cinema and there will be seven films from each category.Eminent Bengali film maker Rituparno Ghosh’s three films will be shown in the homage section.Films of stalwarts like Sukumari,Konnanatt,Raghavan Master,Dakshinamurthy etc. are also there in this section.
In the competition section there will be eight awards including the Golden pheasant prize.Best film will get Golden pheasant and second best film will get Silver pheasant awards.Other awards include Netpac,Fipresci and the special prize for the popular film chosen by the viewers.
The jury will be headed by famous Mexican director Arturo Ripstein. Peter Scarlet,Adithya Assarat,Khalo Matabane,Gouthami constitute other members in the international competition section.Mark Schilling,Elizabeth Kerr,Monica Bhasin will be part of netpak jury ,while Koichi Nojima and Rwiyya Datta are members of fipresci jury.
The festival which starts on December 6 th will culminate on the 13 th, will have 11 venues including the Nishagandhi auditorium,Kanakakkunnu.
