IFFK 2013 Parallel cinema from Latin America

The street film making package from Latin America includes eight films which are made without bowing to the demands of commercial considerations. These films are inventive and aim at interplay of diverse cultural discourses.
Laura Astroga’s film ‘Red Princesses’,narrates the tale of Sandinist warriors of 80 s through the perspective of two sisters.Director Esteban Insausti renowned for his independent ventures will make his presence felt with his film ‘Long Distance’,which has made use of latest digital   technology. The movie is a moving tale of Cubans who are forced to emigrate unable to bear the brunt of economic slowdown.
‘The Wind Journeys ‘ is a film notable for its surrealistic  content. This Ciro Guerra directed movie was shot in around 80 locations in North Columbia and it revolves around a musical instrument called ‘Accordion’,which influences the life of the protagonist in a big way resulting even in the demise of his wife.It narrates the endeavour of the hero to hand over the instrument to its rightful owners and the aftermath.
Fernando Eimbcke’s ‘Lake Tahoe’,focuses on the strange experiences that a teenager confronts. The film has won two awards at the recent Berlin film festival.Alfredo Ureta’s movie ‘Mole’s hideout’ is a peek into the life of Daniel a loner whose life takes a different turn when he comes across a lady Anna who happens to share his traits and emotions.Their budding love becomes problematic with the arrival of Anna’s husband.
‘All about feathers’ is a hilarious comedy with a premise based on cock fight. It is a tale of an extraordinary relation between a cock and its owner,a security guard. The movie is directed by Neto Villalobos. While Mario Cardona’s ‘El emigrante’ is a story of crises, difficulties ,stoic resistance and redemption.
The Argentinian film ‘Clandestine childhood’ sees life from the perspective of a fifth standard student who is forced to forego joys of childhood in the backdrop of the struggle of his family against military dictatorship.Infancia Clandestina is the director of this movie.

The parallel film movement which is on the wane in our land could draw energy from these films and it would be worthwhile if its halcyon days are back.
